Meeting 10 February - David Steele

East Riding Cricket Society is delighted to announce its very special February guest - David Steele , England and Northants batsman, and BBC Sports Personality of the Year 1975, one of only four cricketers to win the award. Plucked by Tony Greig from county cricket in 1975 at the age of thirty-three, David played just eight Test matches in a little over a year, relishing the challenge of Australian quicks Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, and the fearsome West Indian quartet, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Wayne Daniel and Vanburn Holder. Described by The Sun's Clive Taylor as "The bank clerk who went to war," he scored 50 and 45 on debut against the Aussies at Lord's, with his only century coming against West Indies at Trent Bridge the following year. Compared with these cricketing highlights, SPOTY was just the 'icing on the cake'. David's success took everyone by surprise. When he stood up to receive the award, the presenter called him Derek -

Yorkshire Film Archive - review

Great time on Wednesday 13 January with Graham Relton, Manager of the Yorkshire Film Archive . Graham treated an enthusiastic audience to some wonderfully chosen and presented archive footage, interweaving unique cricket film with scenes of local interest. The sporting selection began with a Girls' versus Parents match at Hunmanby Hall School in 1948. Graham then moved on to Cricket at Hovingham , a film shot in the early 1930s by Sir William Worsley, Yorkshire captain and later MCC & Yorkshire President, action from the England v India Test at Headingley in 1952, Bill Bowes's inside view of England on tour in Australia in 1958-9, a snowy Northern Cricket Society Boxing Day match in 1953, the Scarborough Festival 1960, Asian players in action at the Interlink Cricket Club in Bradford in 1972, and last and by no means least, Mike Ulyatt's local masterpiece - Hull Railway Clerks CC Centenary 1973, featuring the late, lamented Circle Ground on Anlaby Road. A big crowd for Yorkshire CCC on Wednesday 9 December - champions on and off the field! To top off Championship titles in men's, women's and age-group cricket, Commercial Director Andy Dawson and his team recently received the ECB Business of Cricket Award 2015, while Jonny Bairstow and York's Jack Leaning were named Championship Player of the Year and Young Cricketer of the Year by the Cricket Writers' Club - succeeding Adam Lyth and Alex Lees. Fresh from Lords, where he was presenting Yorkshire's bid for a team in the first Women's Cricket Super League, Chief Executive Mark Arthur opened up with a forthright appraisal of the club and its ambitions over the next five years before introducing Andy, Jack and ex-England Under-19 Captain, Cottingham's own Will Rhodes . A chance for a photo with the historic Championship trophy, then a lively Q&A session kept all the speakers on their toes! Both Jack and Will have an exciting few months ahead. Jack is

Meeting 9 December - YCCC Champions' Evening

Join local Yorkshire CCC stars Will Rhodes and Jack Leaning , Commercial Director Andy Dawson and Chief Executive Mark Arthur to celebrate the club's second successive Championship title and look forward to the 2016 season. Yorkshire's success - with Beverley bowler Steve Patterson also prominent - came despite losing seven players to England at various points in the season and with two and a half games still to go. 'The first win [was] really special,' commented Director of Cricket, Martyn Moxon, 'but given the circumstances this is probably a bigger achievement than winning last year. To combine developing England players with domestic success is a fantastic effort from everyone involved.' The historic Championship trophy will be on display throughout the evening. Photo opportunities galore! Next meeting : Wednesday 13 January 2016.   Graham Relton presents vintage film clips from the Yorkshire Film Archive . All welcome! Join at any meeti
